Catherine Stewart.

My visual arts practice primarily involves drawing, painting and mixed media techniques on paper, canvas and textured surfaces. I am inspired by regional, rustic landscapes, structures, native birds, flora and skyscapes. My process involves a confident, expressive use of colour, movement and line. Textured surfaces and subtle transparent layers, expose the viewer to fleeting moments, a changing landscape, and well-worn patinas. Traditional scenes are recontextualised, revisited and transformed.  A strong emphasis on drawing underpins my artwork.

My work is contemporary, innovative and alive with movement and colour. I enjoy creating a point of difference with my audience.

Country life is always inspiring to me. I am always on the lookout for visual stimulation, finding joy in the everyday subjects which surround me, such as beautiful bird life, old shearing sheds, rural landscapes and native flora.

Achievements

“Having mostly lived in small regional communities it’s only natural to be captivated by the bush and it’s many wonders. Something different is offered every day. It’s a matter of opening yourself to new ideas and experiences, enjoying the seasons and letting my paintings evolve”.
